Rockin' Friends Spotlight - Do you know me?

Rockin' Friends, Do you know me?

How well you know someone is directly proportional to the amount of time you communicate, share and spend with them.

Being cared for, loved, and understood is a two way street. It requires the willingness to share yourself and for someone to spend the time needed to understand and appreciate the information shared.

Let's use me as example. My mother knows me on so many levels, but that is only because we have spent time together and have talked for numberless hours. We have shared the highs, the lows, the happy and the devastating. I know she loves me and vice versa. Mom knows me.

For instance, Mom knows that...

My favorite cookie is thick chocolate chip hot and fresh out of the oven.

I love chocolate chip cookies

I could live in the library with the lovely smell of books.

I love the library

I feel a great sense of peace listening to the crash of waves on the beach.

I love the ocean

I am not motivated by money and power. I just want us all to live comfortably without fighting and have plenty to eat and a roof over our head to protect us from the elements.

The need for money drives me crazy!

I am terrified of heights and bridges.

I am terrified of heights and bridges

I love learning.

I love learning

I miss the days when Alyssa was young and we played all day.

I love the memories of Alyssa's childhood

I feel happy in the snow and love being all snuggled in warm flannel clothes.

I love snow

I love easily and I'm easily hurt.

I love easily and I'm easily hurt

Jesus Christ is the center of all my choices even though I often fall short and choose unwisely.

I love Jesus

There is no shortcut or substitute for getting to know what makes a person tick and all the intricacies that make them a unique individual. Society understands this concept although sometimes subconsciously. Don't we think it is just absolutely marvelous when someone has been married fifty years or when friends started their friendship in first grade? Yes, we do and that is my point exactly.

If you feel unloved and do not have any friends, look in the mirror. You have a wall around you that not only do others avoid trying to penetrate, but you also do not open the door to let them know you are available to be loved. It is worth taking the chance and making the effort to have these relationships. No, they will not always work out, but when they do, they are priceless.

Rockin' Friends Spotlight of the Week

This is the weekly post where I spotlight my Rockin' Friends who are the Top Nine active participants and loyal followers in my community! If you want to be mentioned here next week, then all it takes is to come in and start chatting with everyone in my community.

With a big thank you for their participation and friendship, here are the Rockin' Friends this week in order of most participation:

This week the special spotlight is shining on Joan of A Bad Marriage Is Fattening. Joan's "About Me" is as follows:

"Joan Oshatz has a Master of Fine Arts in Screenwriting from UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. She has written two screenplays, Kidnapping Margo Sterling and June Bride Feldman.

Joan’s blog A Bad Marriage Is Fattening is a literary mélange of humor and pathos which she plans to publish as a memoir.

Why does Joan write about a bad marriage being fattening? Because she is an expert on a bad marriage and gaining weight, having been in her own bad marriage for twenty years. She went from 125 pounds at the beginning of her marriage to 275 pounds by the time her marriage ended and she divorced her physician husband."

You don't have to read Joan's blog for long before you realize that she has
"imaginary conversations with many people" in her life.

Just like me, Joan has a wonderful relationship with her mother and I say "has" because even though people pass from this world, they truly are not ever gone from our lives.

"Last night I started to think about my mother. Nobody has ever loved me as much as my mother did. Even when we had our differences, I always knew that Mother loved me. And nobody has ever given me better advice than Mother."

In I Am Not My Weight - I Am So Much More Joan has a conversation with her mother that is a definite "got to read" post.

I'm sure we can all find something to relate to in Reality Sucks when Joan faces reality instead of continuing in denial. It is such a shame that we can not keep our heads in the sand sometimes, isn't it?

Obviously, Joan's marriage to her husband was not filled with a whole lot of happiness. After reading Love Is a Mutual Misunderstanding, I think can all relate to a relationship where we are perceived as being the "bad guy" or "the stupid one." It definitely creates an ocean of pain.

I know that so many people chase after and often marry the wrong person. Then in hindsight we wonder if we had gone slightly insane to do such a crazy thing! Well, Joan can understand this just just like we do because she has lived it.

Another great post was about Joan's plan to lose all her weight as outlined in Accountability and it is so true that Addictions Are Hard To Break regardless of the vice. Last but not least, YOU JUST HAVE TO READ My Mad, Passionate, Wildly Sex-Crazed Nights With My Refrigerator to truly appreciate Joan's genius.

I'm so glad that I've been able to get to know Joan better since she has become active in my community and by reading her blog. Be sure to add A Bad Marriage Is Fattening to your blogroll, but also come over and chat with Joan in my community.

The community challenge this week was an effort to promote your blog with style. Thank you to all the participants for working so hard at making the community a success and challenging yourself this week. Not only the community benefits, but we all have been able to support and encourage each other which is an invaluable experience.

The winner of the challenge is:
I'm sure we are all quite happy that Joan won this week since she almost brought us a salad that would feed 491 people in a one of a kind Swavorski Crystal bowl to our Block Party! Congratulations Joan!
A warm thank you for being our Rockin' Friend! We all appreciate the effort you have made to get to know us better and the support you have shown in our individual blogging efforts.

For everyone mentioned in the top nine this week, feel free to grab the Rockin' Friend badge below and thank you for your participation!!

Alexa Tool Bar

The Alexa toolbar helps with browsing and is used by Google to measure website statistics. If that didn't sink in, it will by the time you finish reading this post.

First I will teach you how to install it and then I will tell you why you really should use the Alexa Internet toolbar especially if you have your own blog.

Go to the website for Alexa. The following link will take you directly to the toolbar download page.

Click the big green button labeled Install Alexa Toolbar

Alexa Tool Bar

Click Run

Alexa Tool Bar

Click Run

Click Next

Click I Agree

Alexa Tool Bar

Click Next and do not change the folder that the system is automatically creating.

Alexa Tool Bar

Click Install

Alexa Tool Bar

TaaDaa! You now have an Alexa Toolbar. Your toolbar will probably be a different color because my theme is a gray wooden fence. Remember when I told you all about Firefox Bookmark Link Syncing and how great it worked in comparison to Internet Explorer? One of the features of Firefox is having a choice for the theme. They are called personas.and there are over 180,000...No, I have not looked at all of them! Anyway, that is why my bar appears gray.

Alexa Tool Bar

I know you can't read the bar, but I wanted to tell you several things about it...
  • The toolbar does not contain any advertising
  • Easy to read information about the site such as traffic rank
  • If you're thinking about using your credit card on any site, it might bring you comfort knowing you can find out information about how long the site has been in existence and contact information. So this is a great tool for non-website owners too.
  • Beside the information button (3 bars of a bar graph), you will see a number. That is the site's traffic rank which is the measurement for the number of visitors to the site.
  • Next to the ranking are two blue and green links which will identify related links to the site you are currently visiting by simply clicking the drop down arrow next to the links.
Now you might be thinking, "If it sends information to Alexa every time I visit a website, it must be spying on me!!!!" Well, relax because all the information collected is sent anonymously and only helps with calculating popularity of the site. So it does not profile you or analyze you personally in any way.

Let me show you a few things that I think are marvelous about the analysis of the sites. Of course, you already knew I was going to love this part. So let's proceed...If you click the first icon in the toolbar, it is the Alexa logo and will take you to their site. On this site you will find a tab bar at the top.

On the "Home" tab you can search for keywords, hot topics, find the top sites and explore the hot products.

Alexa Tool Bar

The "Site Information" tab will tell you a wealth of information about the site you are visiting or your own site. Besides the traffic rank which is shown boldly after an explanation of of the site, there is also another set of tabs which also has specific information about the site.

Traffic Stats
  • Traffic Rank

Alexa Tool Bar

Up to this point, it is all in all a great tool to use and a valuable toolbar. But if this hasn't been enough to convince you to download the toolbar since you know that you are in essence casting votes for all the sites you visit and enjoy, then think of this...Every time you visit your own blog you are casting one of those votes which is sent to Alexa. No big deal? Did you forget that Google gets Alexa information and uses it to rank websites?

I just said Google uses the information from Alexa's toolbar information for ranking and indexing sites including your own!

The more you visit a site and flip through the pages, the more you are telling Alexa, Google and the world that the site is important. Don't you want your website to be important?

Of course you do! Duh!

Now I've told you all about something that many people just don't know to do. It is really fun to watch your own site as it moves on up the ranks. If you get stuck with downloading the toolbar, please send me an email and I will be happy to assist you.

The last "Woo Us To Your Blog" post explored the hidden value of the Google Friend Connect widget on your blog. Do you remember the hidden value and options?

As always, attached is the weekly Linky to enter either the main URL to your site or add each post you publish throughout the week. You don't have to do anything special, just drop your link(s) in and get a little extra exposure to your site - as many of your blogs as you would like to link and as many individual posts as you desire to link.

Until next week's wooing post, have fun analyzing your site using the Alexa link and the toolbar.

Keeping an eye on my Alexa toolbar as I surf,

Giveaway - Cuisinart I'm Obsessed With You 11/28

I have an obsession.

I love to day dream about it.

Feel it.

Taste it.

Play with it.

Experiment with it.

I even love to just look at it.

This amazing obsession that I do not get to indulge often enough is deliciously rich and flavor filled ice cream. When I was a teenager, Mom had a big wood ice cream maker. She would fill the metal canister with the ice cream mixture, put on the cover, attach the motor to the top, surround the canister with ice and rock salt, turn it on and then have me stand watch to keep the hole in the side unclogged to drain the melting ice as the mixture churned into a heavenly concoction. Although it was extremely delightful, the ice cream would always take so long to make and would be eaten up so quickly!

Eventually, I grew up, got married and bought my own heavy and cumbersome ice cream maker which I used over and over again. I made ice cream so often that eventually the canister rusted and the wood started splintering pretty bad too.

Because it was such a mess with the water draining out of the hole, I didn't buy another ice cream maker until...

I saw the Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker. Let me just say that I couldn't buy it fast enough and now my freezer always has a fresh batch of the most tantalizing flavors of ice cream my mind can imagine. As Karen Carpenter once sang, "I've only just begun!"

Vanilla Ice CreamStrawberry Ice Cream

Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream

This little machine is still amazing me. It only takes 30 minutes to make a batch of ice cream and there are very few things that I have to clean up when it is finished churning. I love to watch all the ingredients through the hole in the top as they mix together until it gets thick and officially turns into ice cream.

Because I was high on the sugar from the ice cream and because I think you are just phenomenal, I bought another ice cream maker just for my lovely readers. You too can experience frozen heaven in your bowl with your very own Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt, Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker.

Giveaway - Diamond Sand Necklace

There's nothing like a great Etsy shop to catch my attention and Diamond Sand is one of those shops.

I love getting to know the owners of an Etsy online shop because each has a unique experience that motivated them to make handmade items to sell. I had the pleasure of interviewing Lisa at Diamond Sand and I'm sure you will find her delightfully refreshing and talented. So Lisa, please tell us all about you and Diamond Sand...
I have always been a creative person. Some of my earliest memories are of my Mum and me sitting together sewing and making all manner of things, my biggest passion being clothes. Jewelery began as an extension to that. I love the idea of creating something that someone would want to wear, that someone would choose something I had made for a special day, or for every day.

I was talking to a friend one day about a little fantasy I had of opening a shop, and they suggested Etsy to me. I fell in love with Etsy straight away and so ‘Diamond Sand’ was born. I love nothing more than spending time creating new pieces of jewelery. I love every bead and stone that goes into a piece, and as anyone who creates something knows, you pour a little piece of yourself in to every item.

I have been on Etsy for nearly a year, and it has been a fantastic experience. The wonderfully talented and clever people that I have had the pleasure of discovering and making friends with is just astonishing. I am really proud to be part of it.

I think what makes my pieces special is that I really do wish the wearer a lot of love and luck. It’s so much more than making a sale to me. I want much more, for the items to become something special to the wearer. So much so, that when friends fall in love with something I’ve made, they may well very soon find it winging its way to them in the post.

At the moment my jewelery can only be bought via Etsy at the following link:

but I post all new listings via my Facebook page too, so you can keep up to date with all the goings on in my little shop:

If you were to ask me where I would like to be a year from now, I would like nothing more than to have bought a beautiful rustic house in the Spanish countryside, with room for a small studio, in which I can work and be inspired by the wonderful views from its window, and making a living doing something I love. I know its a bit of a fantasy, but I do understand that to achieve certain goals and dreams there is a lot of discipline behind the scenes. One dream that I have achieved is living in the wonderful city of Barcelona. I came here six years ago and I certainly feel like I can turn around after that time and say I have achieved that ambition. Perhaps my little jewelery studio in the Spanish countryside will be next.

Thank you so much for sharing your shop and allowing us to get to know you better Lisa!!
