Mavis Beacon and Eveyln Wood

Education is priceless.

I feel so fortunate to have received a quality education and that I have been able to provide the same for my daughter.

As we prepare for Alyssa to begin her junior year of high school, it takes me back to my own childhood and I remember that familiar experience of buying new crayons (I love to smell all the crayons in the box with all of their tips sharp and pointed), having Mom sew new clothes and receiving new books at school which I carried in my "book bag" and not a backpack. I loved and still love school and educated intelligence. I love the process of learning and having the light bulb suddenly go off in my brain. Helping to cultivate a love for learning is one of the best things we can do for our children especially in the fast-paced world they will be in as adults.

I took typing in high school and just loved it. The methodical sound of the typewriter keys making a steady click, click, click which was echoed throughout the room by other typewriters. That clicking is a relaxing sound to me which is why I insist on keeping my old computer keyboard - I refuse to have a silent key pad. Learning to type is like riding a bicycle - once you learn, you do not forget. However, if you do not learn the basics of typing, how can you improve upon them?

As school begins and you are in the throes of school rules and education, I have three suggestions:

Encourage your children to take typing classes when they are available and if they are not, buy Mavis Beacon. The animated woman actually makes typing interesting and it is a positive, upbeat program.

In Secrets, Friends and Sharing I wrote about the opportunity I received in elementary school to have a free speed reading class. If your child has the opportunity to learn speed reading, encourage them to take advantage of the program. Until tonight I did not realize that the education I received back in elementary school, during the dinosaur era, was so expensive. Be prepared for the price when you click the link. The bigger your family, the cheaper it is...If you have eight children and both parents, divide ten into the price and, hey, it isn't so bad!

Wikipedia provided the background information on the beginning of speed reading which I found to be SO INTERESTING!
"It was not until the late 1950s that a portable, reliable and 'handy' device would be developed as a tool for increasing reading speed. The researcher was a school-teacher named Evelyn Wood. She was committed to understanding why some people were naturally faster at reading than others and was trying to force herself to read very quickly. It is told that while brushing off the pages of the book she had thrown down in despair, she discovered that the sweeping motion of her hand across the page caught the attention of her eyes, and helped them move more smoothly across the page. She then utilized the hand as a pacer, and called it the "Wood Method", which was renamed to Reading Dynamics in 1958. She coined the term "speed reading."

Most importantly, remember that your child is an individual. If you were a straight A, 4.0 student that never had to study, it doesn't mean that your child will be like you. Do not put unrealistic expectations on your child's education and learning ability. Everyone learns at a different pace and with a wide assortment of talents. We do not all have to be math whizzes or speak eight languages. "Encouraging words" go a long way with children.

I have a fantastic mother. During my elementary years I remember coming home from school with some kind of math homework and I asked her to help me. It was some kind of "new" math and although she had helped me get the right answer, we had to do it the "new" way or it was counted wrong. She sat down, looked at it, smiled, and told me that she simply did not understand my math and therefore could not help me. I believe she wrote a note for me to take to school the next day and I really have no idea what it said because she said not to read it (yes, I was that kind of child). I remember the teacher was always available for questions and took her time explaining anything I did not understand. I never asked Mom for help after that, but I also didn't think badly of her either. She encouraged me constantly and told me that I could do or be anything, but that I needed to study hard and make good grades. Then she would always say the magical words..."I believe in you." Those words were the foundation that I stood on especially when things got tough and I started to feel stupid or fear took over. Needless to say, Mom still hates numbers, however, she has more talent in one finger than I possess in my whole body so she doesn't really need to know calculus!

Remember your children as individuals. Assist in their education in the way that it is easiest for them to learn and at a speed that enables them to flourish. Most of all, let them know that YOU believe in them. Those words will resonate in their mind and follow them just like that little bowl of Cream of Wheat.

I typed my posting up to this point and then started surfing for a picture of the little kid walking to school with the Cream of Wheat bowl over his head and I couldn't find it. What I did find on the Cream of Wheat website was a recipe link. I wondered what kind of dishes could be made with Cream of Wheat!

Take a look at these Cream of Wheat recipes.

Craving Sopapillas

Why is it when I have a craving for a particular food, it isn't in the kitchen or the restaurant has already closed?

As I was looking at pictures tonight, I ran across these taken with my cell phone not too long ago. It is my favorite Mexican restaurant and my favorite foods there...

This is the dessert and it is called sopapillas (nicknamed "soft pillows") and pronounced [soh-pi-PEE-yuh]. It is a kind of fried pastry quick bread smothered with honey, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and finished off with a dollop of whipped cream. The word likely comes from the diminutive of the Spanish word "sopaipa," which is used to indicate fried dough sweetened with honey.

Judging from the size of the pictures, it isn't hard to figure out what I'm really craving tonight. Ahhhh...my mouth is watering.

This Proves I'm A Nerd

I actually looked up the definition of "nerd" and I am totally laughing out loud as I am comparing it to me.

Wikipedia states:
Nerd (pronounced /ˈnɜrd/) is a term often bearing a derogatory connotation or stereotype, that refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers or will tend to associate with like-minded people.
So I kept reading...
The stereotypical nerd is intelligent but socially and physically awkward.
I used to be very socially awkward, but I don't really have that problem any more. The physically awkward part unfortunately is true and will always be true. I simply run into things, fall, and break stuff constantly. Did you just decide that you won't ever invite me over to your house? That's okay. I'm amazed that my mother still lets me come over considering the amount of glue that holds her knick knacks together.
Some measure of nerdiness is widely considered desirable, because it suggests a person who is intelligent, respectful, interesting, and able to earn a large salary. This is largely attributable to the rise of the computer industry, which has allowed many "nerdy" people (most notably Bill Gates) to accumulate large fortunes and other measures of social prestige.
Whoa there! I was starting to really feel great about myself until I got to the "earn a large salary" part. Maybe I'm not a good nerd after all...LOL.
The popular computer-news website Slashdot uses the tagline "News for nerds. Stuff that matters."
I have a subscription to Slashdot and it is really interesting stuff! I don't think that only nerds enjoy it...Right?
The Charles J. Sykes quote "Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one" has been popularized on the Internet and incorrectly attributed to Bill Gates.
This can basically be summed up as Nerds Rule!

This whole "nerd" train of thought started when I was surfing the net for selling tips and happened upon this video. I was SO EXCITED! It is TOTALLY cool. I guess this is a test of one's depth of nerdiness. For instance, I wanted to call everyone I knew to tell them about this, whereas, I can tell my mother that she can stop reading the blog now because it will get boring to her. Definitely a huge difference in attitude! Honestly, this is REALLY exciting...

Didn't that just blow you away!!!! It makes me think about how this could have been the way they constructed things like the Pyramids of Giza!

The Tale Of A Clean House

By now I believe most people have seen at least a few minutes of Clean House.

clean house show

The "dirty house people" on this television show totally blow me away. I can not imagine living in homes that are that cluttered, messy and dirty. How do they ever find anything?

When a house is clean, there is a peaceful, easy feeling. Now you're thinking about the Eagles song and it is going to be stuck in your head until you hear it again. I won't make you suffer...play the song while you are reading the rest of the posting.

Where was I? Oh yes! A nice clean home also inspires creativity. Most of the time I think we start out feeling like "Can't it wait?"

woman quote about cleaning

Since a clean house doesn't get that way by itself, we pull out all the cleaning products and like Cinderella, we are transformed. We definitely don't feel beautiful or appreciated.

Cinderella cleaning

I'm sure that the world has men making most of the decisions in marketing cleaning products. Television commercials and magazine ads would try to sell us on the idea that we look happy while cleaning. I know I usually am not smiling while scrubbing up everyone's grime.

happy woman with gloves happy woman polishing
happy woman with feather duster

Who exactly is fooled by this advertising? We know how we are really feeling not only on the inside, but also the outside persona.

woman with cleansers like a maid woman cleaning mirrors in pony tail and sweats

The messes are continuous and just when we think we have everything under control, we find something else to clean.

woman screaming with gloves

Most men can not appreciate the effort required to clean up after an entire family. They still see us through a man's eye which equates cleaning with a different kind of attire.

french maid 1 french maid 2 french maid 3

The only way I would be blissfully happy while cleaning my house was if I knew that Mr. Clean...

Mr. Clean

...was in the other part of my house with my husband...

man vacuuming man carpet cleaning

...or that my husband had contracted a weird virus that forever changed his point of view.

man cleaning humor

So if I can't sit around and read while he cleans the house (which is what he does when I'm cleaning)...

man cleaning while woman reads

...then I'm not going to be filled with smiles...

happy woman scrubbing

...and I definitely won't be attired like a pin up girl.

Maybe I need to adjust my attitude. I will work on that....let's see...I will just try to stay focused while I'm sanitizing my home and imagine a world where men are househusbands.

And I will keep my mind filled with positive thoughts to help get through the mundane tasks which I perform with love for my family.
